Wow, your experiences with the wolf parallel mine with a deer (at least the difficulty in killing it) that I hit on Highway 128 between Cloverdale and Boonville. Your journals are awesome and I look forward to catching up to your current status. I too ride an FreeRadical equipped bike, but I've never been on an extended trip with it yet: you guys are very inspiring!

Jacob, this is great. I am so glad I ran into your dad at the Pheonix Airport. I am just starting to read about your journey and I am sure I will enjoy it. Now I know where you are and what you are doing when everyone I run into from HS asks. Take care and I will be sure to follow and help any way I can.

[...] Then, what do you know, they actually got attacked! How cool is that! Alaska is one of the few places where you still feel like prey. [...]

Jacob,

NO WAY!!!! I think that's the same wolf that attacked me and Josh and Vee on our Eagle Lake trip. Thank you for killing it. Dude.. you are CRAZY! I hope you are safe and careful on the remainder of your trip. We will be waiting with a BIG sign saying "welcome home Jacob" when you return to Bakersfield. Or... at least waiting at our house with a cold beer for you.

Jacob, thoroughly enjoyed your wolf chase story, which is almost identical to mine! I was the first motorcycle chased by this wolf, if you are talking about a location half way between Arctic Circle and Yukon Crossing on the Dalton Highway.

The good news was that I was on a motorcycle. The bad news was that I had just crashed in the slippery mud, it was the middle of the night, I was running on one cylinder, and I could only ride in 2nd gear at about 5mph to avoid crashing again, it was so slick. Also it was raining and dim due to low clouds. That's when this small wolf jumped out and started chasing and gaining on me. It was July 7, 2006.

I looked back for a few seconds through my open visor. The wolf was looking intently into my eyes, measuring my capability. He was only about four feet behind, gaining on my calf.

I had no bear spray and my folding knife was not accessible. My only hope was to speed up, so I kicked it up to 12mph and took my chances. The wolf settled in to a steady lope behind me about 20 feet. Then 20mph, sure I was going to fall again in the mud, the wolf was still there.

By great luck the wheel track in front of me started looking a little dry and had some traction. I opened the throttle and sped away at a good clip for several miles before daring to look back, and by then he was gone.

I thought I was going to be his dinner.

To me it looked like a young healthy wolf of about 90 lbs. Now I hear reports that the one you put out of his misery was more like 45 lbs, that's possible.

I reported my story to the authorities, including Mr. McNay at Alaska Fish & Game.

Congratulations to both of us on our narrow escapes!

Jack London watch out! Your journals are all fascinating to read. I'm so jealous. I've read all the stories similar to what you are living. I am an adventurer at heart. Kelsey is my adventure--and marriage--and parenting...and now grandparenting! Gwenevere Scout was born Saturday at 1:37 pm.

Loved the bear story. Can't imagine the grueling work, the hunger, and the courage it takes (and idiotic foolish daring). May God keep sending you truckers that kill wolves and fuel to cook your food. God bless you on this grand adventure!

Amazing. Absolutely amazing. I actually couldn't stop laughing - mostly because that's how our family reacts to everything - but really? You slit its throat? With your knife? I'm proud to call you cousin.
